Descrizione del veicolo
Why we think you should buy a BMW 02
As ‘suppliers of driving pleasure’ we select our assortment of driver cars based on a broadly interpretable set of criteria that puts ‘driving pleasure’ first. By now you should know we the 02 series is among our favourites.
Based on the Neue Klasse Sedans that BMW built between 1962 and 1972, the concept of the 02 was conceived. In 1966 they presented the 1600-2 (later named 1602) that, with its shorter chassis and lower weight, proved to be much nimbler then its predecessor. The 02 Series would prove to be a bullseye for the Bavarian brand. The sporty compact coupés added a lot to the brands image in terms of sportivity, quality and accessibility for everyday drivers. Over the years several motorisations and bodywork configurations were launched. The 1602, 1802 and 2002 with single, double carburation, Kugelfischer injection or even Turbo added to the sportive and sometimes aggressive stance of BMW.
Over the passed years, the 02 series has gained a lot of traction. The first generation with round taillights, the 2 liter engine and metal grille are the most sought after, which translates in a price mark-up. The second generation with the square taillights, black plastic grille (and other minor details) are picking up as well. Over the years we are starting to appreciate the square lights more and more, and so is the market. The rise in prices for the roundies makes the ‘squarie’ more and more appealing due to the interesting price point.
Another argument would be that combining ‘open motoring’ in the E10 series has become unaffordable if you want to go cabriolet. In the past years ‘voll cabriolets’ touched the six figure mark at a certain moment. Even now, prices begin at around €45.000 leaving a sunroof as an affordable alternative. OR… this is where the Baur cabriolet comes in, offering the open experience with the rigidity the vivid two-litre engine requires.
Why do we present you this 2002 Baur cabriolet?
As said we have a weak spot for 02 series, and this Baur seemed a nice addition to our current selection. When we visited the owner we stumbled upon a collection of cars that was ready to be driven. All immatriculated and ready to go. Seldom do we see this proportion of ready to rumble cars. We immediately felt confident the owner (former mechanic) knew about the E10 specificites because he had three more in his garage and our common ground was the philosophy that cars are made to be driven.
This specimen is presented as a car to be enjoyed as is, but leaves enough room for improvement for the future (first time) owner. This is a car that is ready for writing ClassicCarStories, but with enough small entry level tasks to takeit to the next level. In the market you will find Baurs ranging from €18 to €44k currently. At €20k we are open for any reasonable offer, but we think you already get value for your money. A straight and honest E10 with Recaro black leather seats, longing for your next adventure. Soak up the sun and drive into the sunset.
