The BMW 8 Series (internal designation E31) was unveiled to the public at the BMW stand at the IAA in Frankfurt in 1989: with its choice of 8 or 12 cylinders, the 2+2-seater coupé was positioned in a significantly higher market segment than the old 6 Series coupé series, which had been discontinued in the same year.
With its elegant appearance and highly refined sportiness, the 8 Series immediately won many fans. The models available were the 840i, 840Ci, 850i, 850Ci and, as the absolute top model, the 850CSi, which offered an impressive 380 hp. A total of over 30,000 units of all models were produced by the end of production in 1999.
