In 1974, Porsche introduced the 911 Turbo, which was referred to as the Porsche 930 in the internal nomenclature, as the first production sports car with a factory-installed turbocharger. The top model of the Zuffenhausen-based company was the fastest production sports car in Germany when it was introduced. Initially only available as a coupé, the Cabriolet and the semi-open Targa model followed in 1987. Porsche engineers soon took advantage of the remarkable performance of the turbo 911 and developed the 935 racing model based on the 930. The race car was technically closely related to the production model, and was designed in accordance with the FIA regulations for use in Group 5. Visually, the motorsport driver was also closely related to the production
